The whole process of creating a website and publishing it on internet can be tricky especially for those
who are not technically educated. This is also not helped by the fact that domain registration and web
hosting is one and the same thing. We will clear this up in this article. Web hosting and domain
registration are two separate processes and both of them need to be completed for getting your website
up live on internet. Simply, the processes are as follows: a domain needs to be registered by any domain
registering company and this domain name must be hosted online by using a web hosting company.

The confusion comes in at this point. There are several companies who offer both domain registration and
web hosting while others will offer either domain registration or web hosting. So you may choose to
register your domain name and host your website by using a single company or register your domain
name with one company and host your website with another. Although this is quite simple it cause a great
deal of confusion and undesirable stress to many people trying to setup their website.

In order to use internet for communicating with others or to look up for info, you need to type a website
address in your computer. These addresses are made from a name (letters) or numbers and these are
commonly known as domain names. It is mandatory that all domain names are temporarily unique as the
internet needs to know the exact website which it will bring to the user. If you want to create a website of
your own, you will need a name which you want your website to be known with. This name must be
registered with a domain registration company to ensure that it is unique and after this you become a
legal owner of the domain name.

In addition you need to pick up a domain extension for attributing your domain name. By this I mean .com,
.in, .net, .org etc. There is a need for giving a great deal of thought to selecting domain extension to
ensure that the domain name represents your business or project fully. For example if you are UK only
business, you may want to have a .co.uk extension especially to get better search engine ranking in UK.
After registering the domain name, you need to get the website live online. For this you must buy web
hosting from any of the web hosting companies.
